Essence A Waste Of Time
These people have contacted me repeatedly but I never bothered to write them back. From what I have seen this ad network's main goal is to drive
traffic to their Essence site, where they are showing ads, and promote their own products and ventures. Plus, they are CPC based and make you add a
lousy widget to your site, all under the pretence of driving traffic to your site. This company is a con and is taking Black webmasters for a ride.

If you have never worked with them before how can you say they are bad as a company? Some of the biggest sites out there run by women are using
Essence, Afrobella and YBF in particular come to mind. Granted, CPC can be a bust but in some cases but for a site like Afrobella, I think it can do
really well.
Do you know what the CPC rate is? If it's 50 cents or above that is pretty darn good.

cents a click. Meaning it will take 4 clicks just to make a dollar. Not a very good deal if you ask me.

I think if your site is highly targeted towards Black women Essence ads can be of benefit to you. Essence's ads are totally geared towards women and
that is a plus. The downside is that they only show ads for their website and after a while people will just tune them out and not click. If this
company ads more highly targeted ads for women I can see it being worth the time to join.

Hi Everybody,
Educate yourselves about these network and their purposes.
Here's the rundown on what Essence is doing...
Essence is using your traffic, no matter how small and pooling it together to get higher ad buys/campaigns for them.
They pool it and take it to.... let's say Toyota and say "hey - The Essence Magazine website and now "network" (which you and your site stats are
included in if you are a member) have 500 Unique Visitors and 5 Million Page Views and we now want X amount of dollars instead of the regular amount
they usually get - then Toyota gives them that -- they run the campaign own their site and their "network" and when the campaign is ended -- 30-60
days later they give you pennies on a dollar. And this good for people doing this as a hobby, but for new media entrepreneurs trying to grow this is a
waste of their ad inventory.
But most are just happy to say "I am apart of Essence and they highlight my articles on their OTHER site" (not Essence.com - think about that - who
comes to that Reablack.com - other than Essence network members?).
Conclusion: It's not a good idea and you are being taken advantage of because they count of you being so elated to be affiliated with Essence and you
not being educated and informed on how online advertising works. In addition to this one, please visit sites like http://www.mediapost.com , http://www.adage.com and http://www.blackweb20.com and be informed.

Craig,
Afrobella is apart of numerous ad networks - one being Glam.
What Patrice is doing is probably using a ad system like Open X and having these networks on rotation on her site -- hence using them all to get
revenue and they all activate at different times of the day based on the cpms of each campaign. But, I know in a perfect world Patrice does not want
all these networks using her inventory.
And remember - most publishers have no problem "trying a network out" but trust if they see no revenue them they will eventually drop them.
Also, with Essence network - most of these members are sold of the "Essence" name and the possibility of Essence highlighting their site on RealBlack
and HOPEFULLY one day Essence.com -- so they might be doing this for that and not the money. Think about it.

Thanks for pointing this out, as I notice that also... When checking the code, etc... Recently they sent out new tags which included
Quantcast... Indeed they are grouping all the sites together to make themselves look bigger when seeking Advertisers...

I think they are on their last leg anyway. It seems they will vanish as quickly as they appeared. Not to many people seem to be as enthusiastic about
them as they were a few months back.

All name...no real thought other than jumping on the ad network bandwagon that was hot to do last year and early this year. Go with companies that
have proven sustainability. There are many networks that have been around for a long time and you know that google isn't going anywhere either.

Amen. Can't say it better - educate yourself and test everything (you'll be pleasantly surprised at some of the things you will learn).
